Yesterday, it was "Setsubun(節分)". Setsubun literally means "the day between two seasons".
Traditionally, on Setsubun(or on around Feb 3rd), we Japanese do "Mamemaki(豆まき)" which means "throwing beans". On the evening of this day, people opens the door of their houses and get the demons out of their homes and gardens by throwing beans(like the kids above picture do) and shouting "Oni wa soto, Huku wa uchi!(鬼は外、福は内)" meaning "demons out, good luck"
This picture is taken at "Sensou-Ji", the temple in Asakusa. The kids are participating this event and the red demon is a father of one of the kids here.
There's another tradition on this day, Setsubun. That is "Ehou-Maki(恵方巻)". Ehou-Maki is one of the food and it is kind of rolling sushi.
People eat this like the picture below. And if you eat this looking at the specific direction(this year west-southwest) without saying anything, you will be lucky this year.
